ミュージカルのサントラ盤の魅力を紹介する3回目は「美女と野獣」です。ディズニーのアニメがオリジナルで有名な曲ばかりですから、そのミュージカルも素晴らしいに決まっているのですが、ミュージカル版ならではの良さがあるのです（2024.9.29）

アニメ、ミュージカル、映画
「美女と野獣」は、1991年にディズニーがアニメ化。ミュージカル版は1994年から世界各地で公演が行われ、2017年には実写映画化されています。
ストーリーは、映画版の予告編をごらんください。
ストーリーはアニメもミュージカルも映画も同じですし、ベルと野獣がダンスを踊るシーンで流れる「美女と野獣」、ロウソク立てや時計、ポットに姿を変えられた城の人たちがベルをもてなす「ビー・アワ・ゲスト」、最初は対立するばかりだったベルと野獣が心を通わせ始めた場面で歌われる「サムシング・ゼア」と言った挿入曲も共通しています。
ミュージカル版は、ベルが父親の代わりに牢に入る「ホーム」、野獣がベルへの愛を切々と歌う「イフ・アイ・キャント・ラブ・ハー」といった新曲が追加されているのが魅力のひとつです。「ホーム」については以前に記事にしました。
「サムシング・ゼア」に語り挿入
ところが、もうひとつ、私がミュージカル版に強く惹かれる部分があるのです。
それは「サムシング・ゼア」に挿入された、アニメ版にはなかったベルと野獣の語りの部分です。
具体的に歌詞でみてみましょう（英語で引用しますが、英語の勉強と思ってお許しください）
野獣がベルを壁一面に本が並ぶ部屋に連れて行き、「ぜんぶ君のものだ」（It’s yours!）と言う場面はアニメ版にも出てきます。そこから、ミュージカル版だけのベルと野獣の語りが始まります。
ベル：Oh, this is one of my favorites!
It’s “King Arthur.”
Have you ever read it?
野獣：No
ベルが本棚から「アーサー王物語」を見つけ、野獣に読んだことがあるか訊ね、野獣がないと答えます。
「アーサー王物語」を朗読
アーサー王は5世紀末にブリテンに現れた英雄で、岩に刺さった剣を抜いて王となり、ローマ皇帝を倒して全ヨーロッパの王となり、「円卓の騎士」を率いて聖杯を探す…という中世ヨーロッパの伝説をもとにした物語です。
ベルは「こんなおもしろい物語を読んだことがないなんて！」と言いながら、野獣に「あなたが読んで」とせがみ、野獣が断る応酬が続き、ついに野獣が文字が読めないことを告白します。
ベル：You don’t know what you’re missing

野獣：No, that’s alright
ベル：No, really, you read it
野獣：Oh, no, you…
ベル：No, you
野獣：No! I can’t…
ベル：You never learned to read?
野獣：Only a little, and long ago
そして、ベルは「この本は声に出して読むのに最適な本だったわ」と言って、私の横に座って（sit by me）と促します。
ベル：Well, it just so happens that this is the perfect book to read aloud. Come here, sit by me
読書の喜びを見いだす野獣
ここで歌がしばらくはさまり、ロウソク立てや時計、ポットに姿を変えられた城の人たちが「何かが始まる」（Something there）と恋の予感に胸を躍らせて（このあたりはアニメも同じです）ふたたびベルと野獣の語りになります。
ベル：Knowing now, that this was indeed the legendary sword called “Excalibur,” Arthur tried to pull it from the stone. He tried
Once to no avail. He tried a second time, but still, he could not pull it out. Then, for the third time, Arthur drew forth the
Sword…
野獣：So that must mean he’s the king!
ベル：Wait and see
ベルが「アーサー王物語」を声に出して読み、岩に刺さったエクスカリバーの剣を抜いた者が王様だという言い伝えのもと、アーサーが１度試みて抜けず、2度目も抜けず、そして3度目で剣を岩から抜くことに成功した場面で、野獣が「アーサーが王だ！」と興奮して叫ぶシーンです。
野獣は感動の余韻さめやらぬ様子で、本を読むことがこんなに楽しいことだとは知らなかったと話し、自分が何者かということもしばし忘れさせるほど、物語世界に没入することの魅力を言葉にします（whoとwhatの置き換えはせつないです）
野獣：I never knew books could do that
ベル：Do what?
野獣：Take me away from this place, make me forget for a little while
ベル：Forget?
野獣：Who I…What I am…
「わたしたちは似た者同士」
そして、ベルは「わたしたちは似た者同士だ」と話し、ベルは村で変わり者（odd）として扱われ、孤独を感じていたことを告白します。ふたりの心がはじめて重なり合った瞬間です。
ベル：We have something in common, you know
野獣：What is that?
ベル：In the town where I come from, the people think I’m odd
野獣：You?
ベル：So, I know how it feels to be…different. And I know how lonely that can be
語りの部分はふたたび「アーサー王物語」の朗読に戻り、アーサーが剣を抜き、野獣がとても静かに「言ったとおりだ」（I told you so…）と言葉を重ねてミュージカル版「サムシング・ゼア」は終わります。
ベル：For the third time, Arthur drew forth the sword, and there arose from the people a great shout. Arthur is king
野獣：I told you so…
読書の喜びを見いだしたことの昂奮、ベルもまた自分と同じ孤独を味わっていたことを知り、静かに言葉を添える野獣……。この構成は、ミュージカル版だけのものです。
ちなみに、実写映画版の野獣は読書家として描かれています。そのため、ふたりが読書を通じて心を通わせ、お互いに孤独な者同士であったことに気づく…という場面はありません。
子供向けのアニメにないのはともかく、実写映画がミュージカル版の構成を採用しなかったのは何とも解せません。ここがいちばんいい場面なのに！と、映画館で映画版を見ながら切歯扼腕したものです。
